The Truth About FEMA RVs.
|
A lot of used RV shoppers have been looking at the FEMA campers that have flooded the RV market in the past few months . Most people think of FEMA campers as the plain white campers ( Cavaliers, Morgans, etc) but what a lot of RV shoppers do not know is that a lot of 2006 model , 27 ft. - 34 ft. regular production travel trailers with bunks were also used as FEMA campers during the Katrina disaster but they look like regular travel trailers with striping, a name brand, and holding tanks . How do you tell the difference ? Simply ask to look at the title. A FEMA RV does not have a title like a regular RV does. They have a US Government Certificate for a Title and many states (including Georgia) you have to have the RV inspected before you can even get a tag for it ( I heard some states will not even issue a tag for a FEMA camper ) .
If a dealer or individual has some of the plain white FEMA campers on their sales lot plus a lot of 2006 name brand campers with bunks than chances are they are all FEMA campers ( they sell them all together at the FEMA auctions ) Plus these campers have been lived in for 2 years or more with little or no service or maintenance.and the ones you see are just worn out (or somebody has rebuilt them). You will find that most reputable RV dealers like us will not sell them or even trade for them .
The reason ? These campers have been proven to have toxic levels of formaldehyde and that are dangerous to public health (especially to children or people with respiratory problems) . The need for the campers was so great after Katrina that many safety and health inspections normally done on new campers were not done properly and in many cases overlooked. That is the reason the US Government is selling them instead of saving them for the next disaster is because the Katrina victims were getting sick by living in them . The Government sold these campers to be used as parts and scrap only . Every FEMA camper sold at Government Auction were clearly marked with a large sticker saying "Not to be used for housing " and the buyer signed a contract to tell anybody they sell the camper too the same thing.. A lot of individuals and even as I am ashamed to say RV dealers purchased these RV's and illegally removed these sticker to sell them to the unknowing public for a large profit.
At Parkway RV Center we have been selling RV's in the Chattanooga Area for over 40 years and we do not believe in endangering our customers and their families health to make a quick buck Our promise to you as a buyer is all of our RV's have never been FEMA campers and we will never buy, sell, or trade for a FEMA or a previous FEMA camper. Rest assured all of our RV's are FEMA free and have marketable titles (unlike FEMA campers) . We ask that anybody that is considering buying a FEMA camper watch the videos posted below. .

Please remember that all the plain white Fema campers are not self contained and do not have holding tanks. So that means you cannot use them in most state parks and older campgrounds that do not have sewer and water hook ups . Also many private campgrounds do not allow FEMA campers to stay in there park. By the time you spend the money and time to buy and install a grey, black and freshwater tanks as well as a water pump, RV toilet, tank monitor, sewer and grey tank vents. Awning, to make a FEMA self contained you would be better off money wise to buy a regular travel trailer.
